De Molen Bommen & Granaten (Bombs & Grenades)

Style: Strong Ale, Barley Wine
Alcohol: 15.2% ABV
Brewery: De Molen
Country/Region: Netherlands

Product Description:

De Molen’s reputation is literally second to none amongst European brewers. Earlier this year, one of the world’s biggest databases and resources for all things beer, rated De Molen as Europe’s best brewery (eg better than Mikkeller, Nogne O and Westvleteren, a hefty feat indeed). Like many of the world’s most impressive breweries, De Molen was started by a passionate homebrewer out of a garage. De Molen’s range and reputation have grown steadily over the last few years, although the brewery hasn’t – De Molen’s 500L capacity brewery is certainly one of the smallest we deal with!

Bommen & Granaten – “Bombs & Grenandes”

A US style Strong Ale / Barley Wine, which weighs in at a hefty 15% ABV. This dessert beer uses champagne yeast, which affect both flavour and body. There’s plenty of fruit-like orange, tangerine and sweet apples. It’s powerful and full bodied but still easy going.

Tasting Notes:

Pouring from a 330ml bottle it had very low carbonation and no head, although this does seem to be something that varies from batch to batch with De Molen beers. It is deep orange in colour, similar to a botrytis wine, paler than the average English Barley Wine. Initial aromas are of bold peated malts and earthy smoke with a restrained caramel sweetness and a fruitiness typical of English Strong Ales. The flavour is a bit of a shock to the senses; this beer is far sweeter than it lets on. Big stonefruit-like syrup flavours of apricot, cherry, sweet apple juice and even oranges dominate, this is a real dessert beer. With low carbonation it is quite full bodied, but no doubt the champagne yeast has helped to offset that (the finishing gravity of 1041 is an indicator of just how 'big' this beer is). The huge alcohol content is beautifully masked, there is nothing besides the impressive richness of the flavour to indicate that this beer is stronger than the average wine. An interesting take on the Barley Wine style, this beer will go well with a variety of desserts and sweet dishes.
