Fullers ESB

Style: English Bitter, Extra Special Bitter (ESB)
Alcohol: 5.9% ABV
Brewery: Fuller Smith & Turner PLC
Country/Region: England

Product Description:

This fine Extra Special Bitter is brewed by Fullers Smith and Turner, in London, England. First brewed in 1971, ESB is unrivalled in terms of its flavour and balance. A powerful 5.9% abv, it is brewed using pale and crystal malts, along with Target, Challenger, Northdown and Goldings hops. ESB's reputation as one of the best British beers around is borne out by the amazing number of awards it has won.

Indeed, no beer has won more CAMRA awards. Fuller's ESB has been named Best Strong Ale in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1991, and went on to be crowned Champion Beer of Britain three times - in 1978, 1981 and 1985. Meanwhile, the US Beverage Tasting Institute named ESB 'World Champion Bitter' in 1997 and 1998. Most recently ESB has won a Gold Medal in the 'Premium Ales' category of the 2003 International Beer Competition. This follows on from a Silver medal in the same event last year and another Silver in the Strong Bitter categoty at the 2002 Great British Beer Festival.

Tasting Notes:

The beer pours a lovely, clear amber with a short, tight, sudsy, beige-coloured head. There's strong toffee and nut aromas from the crystal malt, along with some grassy hops and grapefruit/citrus. It's silky smooth on the palate, with an absolutely brilliant mouthfeel, starting with a lovely bitter sweet caramel flavour and finishing with a long, lingering citrus-and-spice hop aftertaste.

Haandbryggeriet Haandbic

Brewed in the style of a traditional Belgian lambic, Haandbic is fermented with bacteria and various wild yeasts. The fermentation takes place in oak barrels, and lasts almost 18 months. Red currents and cranberries are added to the barrels to give flavour and colour. Softer and far more approachable then it’s Belgian brethren, Haandbic is funky, complex and highly refreshing!
