Moorilla Estate in Tasmania has long been renowned for its cool climate wine varietals such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay, and has been described as the “Vanguard of the Tasmanian wine industry” for the last 50 years. Since its acquisition by new owners in the 90’s, Moorilla has been constantly evolving, seeing the addition of a new cellar door, a museum, restaurant, function centre, conference facility - and that’s just scraping the surface. The most exciting of the changes happened in 2005 when Moorilla established their own Micro-brewery and range of beers to be known as Moo Brew.
They currently have a core range of 4 beers, including Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, Dark Ale, and Pilsner, as well as seasonal and vintage offerings such as American Stout, oak aged Imperial Stout, and the promise of beers brewed using local fruit. The beers are packaged with an elegance you would expect only from a winery, in champagne-esque bottles, featuring artwork commissioned by Australian artist, John Kelly, and taste just as exquisite. We’re currently stocking three of their beers, with the possibility of a fourth.
Moo Brew Hefeweizen 5.1% 330ml
This classic Bavarian style wheat beer presents a vibrant lemon yellow, with a thick dense white head. Clarity depends on how much of the sedimented yeast (from a natural bottle conditioning) you choose to rouse when pouring, though we recommend at least some of it ends up in the glass as the bready, spicy character that it lends to the brew adds a complexity not often found in Australian brewed wheat beers. Expect the typical banana and clove, as well as fresh baked bread, hay, caramel, lime, pineapple, and a slightly herbaceous hop finish.
