Brasserie Du Bocq has been a family owned Belgian brewery for more than 150 years and brews a wide range of Belgian style beers including the well known "La Gauloise", "St Benoit", "Triple Moine", "Blanche de Namur" and "Saison Regal" brands.
La Gauloise Brune is a traditional Belgian Abbey Dubbel that has undergone secondary fermentation in the bottle. The beer pours a dark reddish-brown with a fine and generous white head, and is clear and unpasturised. The aroma is typically rich, estery and yeasty with a hint of spicy coriander, while the brew's malt-driven flavours - caramel, brown sugar and dark fruits - are balanced by a spicy, slightly bitter, hop aftertaste.
Foods to try with this full-bodied beauty include game, red meats, or any spicy white meats.
Tasting Notes:
Pours a clear ruby-red brown with a medium-sized, fine-bubbled, beige head. An interesting, sharpish fruit (green apples?) aroma is accompanied by hints of banana, something spicy, burnt candy, malt and yeast. The Brune is medium-to-full-bodied and smooth on the palate, with the yeast and malt flavours dominating at first – with less sweetness – and hop bitterness hiding the higher alcohol content reasonably well. Lingering, bitter, hoppy, dry finish.
